New Pukall Log Homes Design Center in Woodruff

Pukall Lumber opens its log home design center in Woodruff.

Pukall Log Homes Design Center in Woodruff, WisconsinPukall Lumber Co. recently built and opened a log home showroom and design center on Highway 51 in Woodruff, on the north side of Citizens Bank. The building features milled white pine 8” by 8” logs, which are dried and milled at Pukall’s manufacturing facility in Arbor Vitae.

“We have offered log home packages for years,” said Susan Pukall. “But frankly they have been difficult to market without the ability for our contractors to show their prospective clients an example of what our milled log homes look like.”

The log home packages are affordable and energy-efficient. Kiln drying the logs minimizes shrinkage and settling, to ensure a weather-tight fit.  We also offers 6” x 8” and 6” by 6” milled logs for smaller cabin designs.

Design Center Brochure“We are excited about making this a responsible project,” Pukall said. “Our plant underwent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification last year, which means that the wood is certified to have come from well-managed forests and is tracked through our manufacturing process.”

The building showcases many of the products Pukall Lumber manufactures including wood flooring and paneling, log siding, and pressure-treating decking, as well as other products we sell such as doors and windows, cabinetry and countertops, closet systems, Ipe decking, railing systems and roofing.

The work on the Log Home Design Center was done by several construction companies that are experienced in building log homes in the region. “Pukall Lumber is not in the construction business, we will leave that to our customers,” she said. Rather, the purpose of the showroom is to allow builders to show their clients many different product options.

Environmental Statement

Wood Products—Nature's Renewable Resource

Wood products have so many cost and construction advantages over other building materials that it’s easy to forget what an environmental asset it is to use wood. We sometimes forget that wood is naturally reusable, recyclable and biodegradable. It is also the best insulator of all structural building materials: a home built with wood requires less energy to heat and cool, thus conserving finite fossil fuels and coal. It also takes far less energy to transform trees into wood products than it does to manufacture steel, aluminum, masonry or plastic products with less pollution of the air and water, too.

Wood is a renewable resource.  In fact, more trees are grown each year in the U.S. than are harvested or lost to disease, insects and fire. One third of America is covered with trees today, more than 70 years ago. In Wisconsin, forest land increased 4% between 1983 and 1996, and now covers 46% of the total land area of the state. A growing forest removes the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, while giving off life-sustaining oxygen. But forests that aren't managed and selectively harvested fall prey to insects, disease and forest fire.

As world populations increase, the demand for wood and wood products continues to increase. To meet this growing demand, responsible forest management in Wisconsin forests has the potential to take some of the pressure off more at-risk forests in other areas. Forest products resposible produced in Wisconsin are a good substitute for products made from wood harvested in tropical or boreal forests, where sustainable harvest is more difficult to maintain.
