Manufacturing Machine Operators-Planing Mill
Full-time status; 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; 10-hour day shifts; Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday.
Summary
The Machine Setup/Operator-Planing Mill will operate machinery and other equipment that produces finished boards and mouldings. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
Basic set-up and operate machines to include turning on cutting heads, infeed rollers, lubrication, chip-breakers, run/jog.
Adjust cutting heads, infeed rollers, infeed gate, side shoes, straight edges, hold downs, outfeed rollers, chip-breakers.
Set production speed by adjusting controls for feed rate, cutting tool speed, and cut depth.
Read production work orders. Confirm lumber species, grade, and size for production run.
Assure product measurements, quality, and all specifications are correct. Maintain thickness tolerance by measuring boards throughout production run.
Maintain the machine by oiling and greasing join knives when they are dull; change knives and chains as needed. Responsible for oiling and greasing machines.
Identify lumber defects. Check for stones and nails embedded in the unfinished boards and remove as needed. Check lumber moisture contact.
Maintain quality control by monitoring finished products, rejecting items that do not meet specifications, and removing those from production.
Communicate with Lift Driver when wood shavings trailer is full and needs to be replaced.
Responsible for clean-up procedures in work area and surroundings.
Responsible for shutdown operations to include turning off machines and blowers at the end of the shift. Assure shutdown conforms to all required standards.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. Three to six months’ related experience and/or training in machine operations and lumber grading standards is preferred.

If you are not currently a NELMA Certified Lumber Grader, and you have 3-6 months' experience and/or training in lumber manufacturing, APPLY TODAY. Pukall Lumber Company offers an internal Certified Grading Program for employees to actively pursue the NELMA Certification.

Read and understand National Lumber Standard Board (NLSB) grading rules.
Examine lumber on table, moving belt, chain conveyor, or in racks for machine and natural defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling.
Grade and mark lumber according to established industry standards to ensure specified dimensions are deemed appropriate to quality standards.
Monitor and tally pieces of lumber, either by hand or computerized tally system, according to grade and board footage.
Determine cuts to be made to obtain the highest marketable value from material.
Scale board footage and record results.
Identify odd species or boards that need further processing and isolate them from the production area.
Learn and understand the Sorter to include the control panels to operate the sorter, dry chain, north end infeed, landing table chains, lug loader chains, sorter speed, dropped packs, and software.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Proven record to be consistently at work and punctual for scheduled shifts.
NELMA Lumber Grader Certification is required or obtained within one year of continuous employment.
One-year related experience in applied grading.
Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Manufacturing Machine Operators-Sawmill

Resaw Operator
Adjust cutting heads, infeed rollers, infeed gate, side shoes, straight edges, hold downs, outfeed rollers, chip-breakers.
Set-up saws and adjust for precision on an ongoing basis by measuring thickness at various times during the day.
Size up rough lumber on conveyor as lumber approaches saw to determine cut to be made. Lumber approaches from both sides, and this position will determine which conveyor to pull from while keeping an even flow.
Manipulate buttons and knobs on control box to adjust saw for thickness of board to be cut, and to control speed of saw and feed rolls.
Push lumber into an upright position and feed in to saw.
Replace dull saw blades.
Trimmer Operator
Size up rough lumber on conveyor as lumber approaches end trimmer saws to determine appropriate cut to be made. Judge the optimum length that can be obtained using appropriate grading standards.
Adjust saws for length of board to be cut, if needed.
Replace dull saw blades.
Edger Operator
Size up rough lumber on conveyor as lumber approaches saws to determine appropriate cut to be made. Looks at both sides of the board and edge the board to optimum grade and yield that can be obtained using appropriate grading standards.
Adjust saws for the width of the board to be cut, if needed.
Manually adjusts the board to a proper position in relations to saws using overhead positions guides.
Determine which station to direct the edged board to next.
Tail Sawyer
Examine rough lumber on conveyor prior to trimming to detect manufacturing defects or problems or to determine opportunities/needs to process further.
Judge the board for grade and yield to maximize lumber value.
Manually reposition board as needed and feed to trimmer or send back to resaw or edger operator for further processing.
Discard scrap or defective pieces of lumber by dropping down into chipper.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. Three to six months’ related experience and/or training in machine operations and lumber grading standards is preferred. Proven capability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
